Mina Blyly-Strauss submitted a series of digital photographs by 4 In Progress artists that are now showing in New Jersey as part of an international exhibit.

This September, artists Kristine Sorensen and Mina Blyly-Strauss began their 4th year teaching at Four Directions Charter School. This fall courses will include graphic design, documentary video, digital photography, electronic portfolio and video collaboratives. Funded by Four Directions Charter School and the MN State Arts Board.
Artists Kristine Sorensen and Nikki Isham led a video and photography workshop for 38 youth at the local elementary school in Nett Lake village. Though often chaotic with artists working around the clock, the artwork that was produced is powerful. A follow-up session will take place later this fall and will include both a video screening and exhibit. The workshop took place August 15-26th. Funded by the Womens Foundation of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
Artist Tomas Leal led a five day workshop for twelve Latino youth as part of a camp activity for teens that have been adopted into non-Latino families. Tomas did an excellent job bringing young participants together to express their thoughts and ideas about their experience growing up as part of this unique community. This project has been an interesting challenge, as we have not worked extensively with adopted youth in the past. We have much to learn but are excited about connecting with young people with this life experience. The work created was presented to approximately 1000 people at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Lakeville Minnesota at the conclusion of the workshop. Funded by LaSemana and the MN State Arts Board.
Jordan Robinson has been producing videos since before he could walk. Now at the age of 13, he has completed yet another great video short that is a remake of the great silent film “The Phantom of the Opera.” Jordan worked with artist Kris Sorensen to get his make just right. he was helped in this production by his brother William and his dad - Mike Schmid.
Artist Regina Mitchell and mentor Danielle White led ten youth through a video biography workshop. Participants interviewed one another about their lives and then took their cameras into their homes to tell the stories of their lives. The works are still being edited but provide the most candid look into life on the reservation. The video compilation will be approximately 30 minutes long and will showcase the lives of 7 of the ten youth involved. Release date is estimated for December of this year. Artists Yodi Georgiana Morris Cloud and Cheyenne Whitefeather mentored 9 girls from the Cass Lake area in the arts of digital photography and video. They organized the workshop, planned curriculum and oversaw three young mentors in the process. Youth artists created a series of outstanding photographic and video works that will be exhibited later this fall in the Cass Lake area. This workshop took place August 1st - 12th, 2005. Funded by the WOmens Foundation of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
Artist Nikki Isham and a host of young mentors from S Lake taught a digital media workshop for twelve youth living in the local area. Nikki introduced photography and video as a poetic experience encouraging the young participants to express themselves through imagery. The work begun is very strong but some follow-up will be required later this Fall. A tentative exhibit is scheduled to take place at the school by December of this year. The workshop ttok place August 1st - 12th. Funded by the Womens Foundation of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
Facing the most difficult of years, students at Red lake High School have continued to persevere in the production of a video short about a troubled young man that is saved through the love and teachings of a traditional family. The partnership with Red Lake goes back more than ten years now. It is a powerful relationship that each year seems to lead to great video work. Artist Kris Sorensen will be returning this September to assist students in completing a host videos that will be premiered later this fall. Due to the shift in the spring schedule, editing took place in late July. Funded by Red Lake Nation and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
In Progress would like to congratulate Miriam Cano Vigil and Gerardo Vigil on the birth of their beautiful son Christopher. Christopher was weldomed into the world this past March. His parents wed last September 17, 2004 with each of their families present. Miriam and Gerardo worked together to produce the video short “LaLrona” last summer during our annual Latino Documentary Video Workshop held in Carbondale Colorado.
In Progress provides opportunities for young people to develop their skills as storytellers, artists and leaders through the use of digital media. Each year, this small non-profit partners with urban, rural, and tribal communities to provide quality mentorships that contirbute to building the public voice of those least heard in our nation, serving more than 1,000 youth each year.
