Yet another program at Four Directions Charter School is focused on training high school students to teach media arts at neighboring charter schools. Twelve youth trained on presentation techniques, technical troubleshooting and mentorship. They then traveled to the High School for Recording Arts and El Colegio Charter School providing media arts training to more than fifty students. Artists Anna Sherwood and Kristine Sorensen led this initiative. We are also producing a curriculum guide that will be distribute nationally this October. This was a unique opportunity for In Progress and has given us opportunities to develop our peer mentorship concept in full.
Youth artists Gao Yee Thao and Kao Choua Vue are currently mentoring two Hmong youth in the art of digital photography. Gao Yee and Kao Choua began learning the art of photography last spring and have been quick to share what they have learned with others. Our hope is that their mentorships will expand to include six youth by Fall 2005.
Professional photographer Brian Holmes will be teaching a ten-week mentorship this October for six youth artists. He will introduce them to professional concepts for creating and presenting work in commercial settings. Sessions will meet weekly through the end of December. Funded by the Minnesota State Arts Board and a host of In Progress volunteers.
Artists Cheyenne Whitefeather & Yodi Georgiana Morris Cloud are currently planning a mentorship for youth and will have more report by October.
Originally scheduled for May, this workshop is being rescheduled for Fall 2005. A group of young Latinas are excited to get started producing their own digital photography work during a weekend workshop that we hop to implement soon. No artist has been selected yet for this experience but will hopefully include Renato Lombardi who was an excellent instructor for In Progress earlier in the year.
This Fall In Progress will present a digital photography show in downtown Saint Paul. Early this year, we joined a cooperative artist movement that supports exhibits by emerging artists. The show should provide strong visibility to our young artists.

Kao Choua Vue, Gao Yee Thao and Jamie Thao are the new interns at In Progress, thanks to Hired. They will be working soon, which means more studio time; weekdays from 3:00-8:00PM. This is going to be a new and exciting chapter as In Progress continues to grow.
Gao Yee Thao and Kao Choua Vue spent the last few months cleaning studio 301. They gave the place more of a homey look. Also, both of them taught a digital photography class to two students this summer as interns for In Progress. They worked at least twice a week and are continuing to work more this fall. When you come by, you’ll see that there’s a little more room to meet and get your work done. We hope you like it.
Kao Choua Vue is an In Progress intern. She has been volunteering as a mentor and lab supervisor since spring 2005. This fall Kao Choua has taken on the task of learning how to manage our new website. Thank you Kao Choua!!
